The Tumblr Homepage: 2007 to 2011

If you fancy a bit of Tumblr nostalgia, here’s a look back at some of the site’s Home/Login page (www.tumblr.com) designs from the time of launch in winter 2007, to the summer of 2011.

The first design predated the site’s official launch, and is seen below as it looked in early January 2007. It also remained through the launch period (February 2007) and into the spring of that year…

Next comes the first update to the original page. Here’s how the revisions looked just after the update at the start of May 2007…

Now November 2007. Things are beginning to look a bit more familiar, but the background is dark grey rather than blue…

Just a month or so later in December 2007 and the homepage now features Tumblr’s mid blue backdrop. The 30 second sign-up-and-post period has been reduced to 10 seconds! Maybe the typical user was getting sharper and faster on the keyboard…

Moving forward to September 2008, there’s a slicker and more professional look to the Homepage. Headline status is given to user customization – almost certainly in a bid to attract users from WordPress.com, who would have to pay for such luxuries (and still do)…

Now fast-forwarding to October 2009, where we find a link above the main signup form documenting 24 reasons why you’ll love Tumblr. The text on this link was subsequently updated to boast 30 reasons, but the basic screen design persisted through most of 2010…

Now we arrive at what I believe was by far the best ever Tumblr Homepage. It was actually presented all on one vertical sequence, on a single page, but due to the limitations on image height I’ve had to split it into three. It outlined all of the 30 reasons why potential users might love Tumblr, in a very persuasive manner. Here’s part 1 of screen, from December 2010…

The final design is a mobile-focused Homepage from August 2011. The actual login form was positioned just below this tall collection of images, but you’ve probably seen enough Tumblr login forms for the time being…
